Taking children to school with Covid-19, what is the best way?

Taking children to school with Covid-19, what is the best way?

Alas! Summer is ending.

Beautiful days, sea, evenings outdoors almost made us forget the scenery from a science fiction book we all experienced this spring.

They have made us forget to the point of engaging in behaviour that jeopardises the opening of the schools.

These three weeks before the start of school there is a need to be as cautious as possible to keep new cases to a minimum and not risk a complete lock down again.

Trusting in the good sense of our fellow citizens, we are therefore getting ready for school, back to school: books, notebooks, homework, aprons, an attempt to adjust the somewhat unbalanced timetable.

And have you thought about how to get your children to school, especially now with Covid-19?

We may be biased but we deeply believe that the best way to get children to school, Covid or no Covid, is by bicycle.

We see this with our 2 little ones, Raul 6.5 and Naomi who turns 13 months today, who have a lot of fun on their bikes, especially when they are together!

Taking the children by bike with all the necessary furniture, the little one to the nursery and the big one to school is the best way to start our day.

We do this all year round, in fact since we have cargo bikes, we have sold the second car.

And the first one is always in the garage.

But there is also the dark side of this choice: children cannot stand the car. )))

That is, it's not that they get carsick or anything, they just can't stand it.

Unfortunately, we have grandparents 200 km away, so once a month we have to leave.

If it weren't for that we might have sold the first one. With considerable savings on stamp duty, insurance, diesel and maintenance. In fact, we are considering selling it and renting one if necessary. We will keep you updated.

Back to school, for the little ones, the bike ride is a time of cuddling and sharing.

Because of our use and profession, we use two cargo bikes, the first is our everlasting love TAGA FAMILY BIKE, a three-wheeled cargo bike where the children are in front, I can see them and can easily communicate, pet them and participate in the conversation.

TAGA FAMILY THE THREE-WHEEL CARGO BIKE FOR TRANSPORTING CHILDREN

Besides, I can carry everything I need and even do a mega weekly shopping trip on the way back.
In TAGA FAMILY the seats can be placed in 3 ways: both in the same direction facing the road, both facing parents or one facing the other.

I personally prefer the latter way as the children love to interact with each other and with me.

SWEET CURRY THE TWO-WHEEL CARGO BIKE TO TRANSPORT CHILDREN SAFELY

The other family cargo bike we have is the electric Sweet Curry, a two-wheeled cargo bike with a very unique frame to lower the centre of gravity and thus make it more stable.

The bike has a classic 26-inch wheel at the front, while the wheel at the back is smaller, at 20 inches. That's where the extended rack with all the accessories for transporting two children in comfort is located.

In terms of load capacity, this one is no joke: it has enough space in the back to comfortably accommodate two children.

While in the large front basket you can really carry anything up to 22 kg.

Among the pros of this bike is that it is very manoeuvrable and goes everywhere, although the TAGA FAMILY is already very manoeuvrable and goes almost everywhere a two-wheeler goes.

But Sweet Currybeing on two wheels beats her on that. The children are closer together and so, turned towards each other, the big one towards the little one they can cuddle and interact even more. The con is that the children are at the back and so I can't see them.

A very good question that we are often asked and which deserves a detailed answer in a separate article is: But is it legal to carry two children on a bike?

In fact, this is a very good question, because the Highway Code says that you cannot transport two children on a bike or a child older than 8 years of age on a bike that has not been specially built for this purpose.

But the cargo bikes of which TAGA and YUBA are the best representatives, TAGA as a 3-wheel cargo bike and Yuba as a 2-wheel cargo bike, are specially built to transport children and heavy loads. In fact, European traffic laws and regulations allow up to four children to be transported on one bike.

While there is another very sore issue that nobody talks about:

Is it correct to carry two children on a bike on a child seat approved to carry up to 22 kg on a carrier designed to carry 8 to a maximum of 10 kg? Have you ever thought about it?

We will explain this topic in more detail in our next article.

Meanwhile, we focus on summer activities and prepare for our little brats' return to school.
