Women's Day. The bicycle the first ally for women's independence, a union that in some ways marked the beginning of women's emancipation in the world.

After the second half of the 19th century, the 'velocipede' presented itself to the eyes of Europeans, with the intention of revolutionising the world. But given the costs, its use was reserved only for wealthy families.

It was the women of the European aristocracy who were the first to experience and benefit from this innovative tool for urban mobility.

A union that was considered bizarre at the timebut instead allowed the woman to rediscover herself and her independence.

The love between woman and bicycle had more than one enemy back in the day. There were those who theorised that riding could make women sterile. Or those who believed that cycling was immoral and unfriendly to the fairer sex.

But despite everything, the woman never stopped pedalling.
In defiance of moralism and theories, she continued to ride, despite the difficulty of riding in clothes that were decidedly incompatible with cycling.

 

In the years to come, the bicycle became more accessible to the pockets of the people. As a result, female ingenuity, too, slowly began to replace corsets and skirts with bloomers, the ancestors of our trousers.

On bikes, women were free from men. Free to go without anyone being able to say no to them.
And so it was that Annie Londonderry, in 1894She challenged society, cycling around the world to question the perception of femininity.
